The KMS Buddy Club is an organization, with assistance from grant funds through Project Unify, that was developed so that students with disabilities experience a sense of acceptance and love. It is designed to unite students in the general education setting with students with disabilities in order to engage, support, and interact as buddies in school and community events.†
Mrs. Aycock, Special Education Learning Strategies teacher, is the club's sponsor. Members of Buddy Club will be buddies to students in, primarily, the self-contained Special Education setting, and be positive role models for other students with special needs in the school. Members are required to visit their buddies at least one time per week during reading renaissance or the students' lunch (7th grade lunch). Students may not visit during their exploratory or academic classes. Members also have a blue Buddy Club card to show their teachers or to use as passes to class when visiting their buddies.†
Club members may also have the opportunity to accompany their buddies to Project Unify tournaments at other participating middle schools, as "Fans in the Stands" at other Project Unify tournaments in the district, and/or accompany the students to†the Special Olympics in the Spring of each year.
